- ICU is closed but the hospitalists still admit to the ICU with a critical care consult only for those physicians who we admit for. Unassigned patients who need critical care are admitted by Critical Care Team and the hospitalists take over the care when the patient is transferred out of the unit. This program co-manages approximately 2 to 3 critical care patients per day.
- Hospitalists do not have an admitting role on day shift – the night shift works admissions, covers emergencies, and covers needs of patients on the census. When the hospitalists do orientation for locums, they work about 2 to 3 days with someone in a shared assignment so they would get both some patients to round on and some new patients to admit and keep for a few days. One of the physicians is the on call MD during the day-- they accept new patients (they do not always see the new ones but organize the new patient into the census) and are on the code team for the day. Most of the admissions are in the evening hours and on night shift.
